Digimed set out to create a telemedicine platform specifically tailored for Malta, addressing the absence of an existing local telehealth solution. By bridging the gap between doctors, patients, and pharmacies, Digimed enhances healthcare access and efficiency through advanced digital technology, offering user-friendly services tailored to real-world needs.

Initial Challenge

Digimed’s journey started when they approached us with the ambitious but initially broad concept of a digital platform to connect doctors and patients—a first-of-its-kind solution in our region. Given the project’s innovative nature, we quickly recognised its potential as one of our largest undertakings. However, to transform this concept into a structured product, we needed to break it down into clear, actionable requirements.

The client’s request to launch multiple apps simultaneously added complexity to the project, pushing us to ensure each app would integrate into a cohesive platform. Additional technical challenges included designing an intuitive user experience that kept all critical information on a single screen for both web and mobile and integrating medical standards for uniform terminology across systems (SNOMED).

Vision

The vision was to create a unified platform that would streamline medical interactions, enhancing accessibility, and efficiency for patients and providers alike. Digimed aspired to simplify the patient-doctor relationship while offering robust data integration, and tools for managing healthcare at scale.

Our Solution

Threls developed a solution rooted in close collaboration and a rigorous approach to business analysis, UX/UI design and development. We began with icebreaker sessions to foster a comfortable and open environment for sharing ideas, which evolved through workshops and informal gatherings, reinforcing a collaborative approach. We also consulted with external experts in digital health and AI to refine the platform's scope. Ensuring that we add value at every stage, even during specification gathering, aligns with our core principles. We believe involving the right expertise from the outset is essential to developing a solution of this scale and impact.

Through a detailed specification document, we outlined requirements and analysed the impact of each feature, including the integration of SNOMED for standardised clinical terminology, essential for consistent patient records. To support scalability, we set up an AWS serverless environment, building both our expertise and the infrastructure for ongoing maintenance.

Feature

Doctor Patient
Management System

Project Year
June 2023

Purpose

In order to aid doctors in managing patient information, Digimed needed a system to support doctors in managing such information efficiently during patient consultations by providing an organised, digital record-keeping platform.

Solution

This system enables doctors to add patients to the platform, automatically inviting them to create an account for easy access to their health records. During consultations, doctors can take private notes, update the patient’s health record, and write digital prescriptions directly in the system, which are then sent to the patient. This streamlines patient management, making data accessible for ongoing care and record-keeping.

Feature

Doctor App

Project Year
April - Sep 2024

Purpose

The doctor app is designed to streamline doctors' interactions with patients by providing a comprehensive web and mobile platform for consultations, scheduling, and patient management. Thorough doctor verification was also critical to maintain Digimed’s credibility and patient safety.

Solution

To onboard doctors, we integrated with Sumsub for secure verification and added an extra manual verification step by the Digimed admin, ensuring the authenticity of each doctor. Once onboard, doctors can set their own availability and fees for both online consultations and home visits.

The consultation interface was designed to optimise the doctor’s experience by organising critical patient information—personal details, health records, and diagnosis—in a single view. To accommodate various consultation styles, doctors can initiate video, audio, or chat-based interactions. Throughout the consultation, they can take private notes, update health records, generate prescriptions, and issue sick certificates and referrals, which are then shared with the patient after the session.

The app also features a dedicated admin panel for doctors to track patient lists, manage income, and handle invoices, offering a full-service solution that enhances both doctor-patient interactions and administrative efficiency.

Feature

Patient App

Project Year
April 2024

Purpose

The Patient App, available on both web and mobile platforms, is designed to streamline healthcare management, allowing patients to create health profiles, schedule doctor consultations, and access ongoing care resources. It aimed to make complex onboarding steps easier while offering a comprehensive yet accessible tool for patients to manage their health.

Solution

To address the lengthy onboarding process, we prioritised essential steps like registration and basic details upfront, allowing users to complete their health profile and bank info entry later. Once registered, patients can book appointments by specifying symptoms, adding photos, and explaining their visit reason. They can also save favourite doctors and review post-consultation documents like prescriptions, referrals, or insurance certificates. For insurance forms, we collaborated closely with the insurance representative to ensure compliance, enabling automatic pre-population of patient data. Additionally, prescriptions link seamlessly to the Pharmacy App, allowing patients to check medication availability.

For home visits, extensive field research and discussions with doctors helped design a feature that avoids typical location tracking, respecting the nature of medical care logistics. Patients can also add dependents (e.g. children, spouses, parents) to manage health information for family members. The dashboard also includes an Education Center, giving patients access to valuable health-related resources.

As a long-term partner, Threls is committed to supporting Digimed's vision by continually improving and scaling the platform to meet the evolving needs of Malta’s healthcare system and eventually beyond. We look forward to continuing this relationship, enhancing Digimed’s impact and adapting the platform to serve an expanding user base and new technological advancements.
